What if my child doesn't want to sit?

Make practicing short and playful.

What if my child doesn't want to sit?

Resistance is common: “No!” or getting up immediately. That doesn't mean you have to push. Short and playful practice helps more than insisting.

Keep it short

Let your child sit for 1 minute and then stop.

Why this works:
Your child experiences no coercion, but learns that it is a short moment.

Make it a game

Sing a song or read a mini-book.

Why this works:
Distraction removes tension.

Use predictable sentences

Say: “We'll try for a bit, and then you can play again.”

Why this works:
Your child knows what's coming and feels in control.

Reward trying

Say: “Good job trying for a bit.”

Why this works:
Appreciation builds motivation.

Rather step back for a moment and try again later than fight. Rest works better.
