The Ready for Potty was created from the Dutch diaper brand Toddy by founders Guus Meijer and Nathan Volkers.
They now work with pedagogue Claudia Werner Phd to reduce the abandonment of potty training and develop the training.
In 2021, two young dads started Toddy, a mission-driven company focused on reducing diaper waste. They both earned master's degrees in Delft and highly value scientific backing.
Before starting Toddy as a company, they first conducted several studies to map the impact of disposable diapers and sustainable alternatives, such as cloth diapers and (early) potty training. They did this under the name of the Future Diaper Project, essentially the 'research label' or precursor to Toddy. The studies were conducted in collaboration with True Price, behavioral agency Duwtje, the municipality of Amsterdam, the municipality of Leiden, and Rijkswaterstaat (Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management). They also started a collaboration with Professor Alexandra Vermandel and contributed to the Handbook on Potty Training in 2022, focusing on delayed potty training and how to reduce it.
So, from 2021, Toddy focused on sustainable alternatives to disposable diapers by offering 3 products to individuals: 1) cloth diapers in an affordable subscription (as a part-time/more feasible alternative to disposable diapers); 2) disposable diapers with 40% less plastic; 3) potty training for early potty training.
All Toddy diaper customers received potty training as a gift, with the promise that customers would receive diapers for free if their children weren't potty trained by the age of 3!
As a diaper brand, Toddy was able to work on sustainability and company growth for 2.5 years through investors. Unfortunately, the market proved too small, and the growth of the company in terms of subscriptions for cloth diapers and sustainable diapers was insufficient to continue the company in its then-current form. The sale of these products was discontinued in May 2023.
Guus and Nathan thought it would be a shame to just leave all the accumulated knowledge and development of toilet training as well. So they began to further develop the Ready for Potty as a product and sought out municipalities and child care organizations for collaboration.
They also remained active members of the Circular Diaper Program working group of Rijkswaterstaat through the Future Diaper Project. The goal remains: reducing diaper waste, a challenge that municipalities face together. They are therefore continuing the mission from the Future Diaper Project.
Because the Toddy diaper brand has been discontinued, we have relocated the potty training product, Ready for Potty, to the Ready for Potty label as of March 2024.
The book is also available at libraries, reserve it directly. Includes free access to the accompanying potty training app.
