We understand that this can be stressful. It helps if you can set aside some extra time and attention to guide your child through the potty training process. But remember: follow your child’s lead and don’t rush things. Start by sparking their interest, and don’t take the diaper off all day at once. Build up to it, and carefully assess whether your child is ready for the next step. Are there other caregivers, such as grandparents, a babysitter, daycare, or preschool? If so, ask what they can do to support your child. And let them know what stage you’re at in the potty training process. Give lots of compliments and keep telling your child that they’re a big girl or a big boy. And big kids don’t wear diapers—they wear underwear. Most children want to be big. Starting school is exciting for many children. Because of this, potty training can actually be more difficult right before school starts. Keep this in mind and don’t put too much pressure on it. Discuss with the school in advance what the rules are regarding using the restroom, or if your child has an accident.
