My child pees on the floor on purpose and then laughs. What should I do?

Your baby isn't laughing at you

Does your child pee on the floor and then laugh? To us adults, it might seem like your child is doing it on purpose or even laughing at you. But most of the time, children don’t mean it that way at all.

It might feel strange or funny to your baby. Your baby might find it funny that pee suddenly comes out. If they’re not used to it, it can be quite a surprise. Your baby might also be startled by the pee. In that case, they might laugh out of nervousness.

Keep it lighthearted and describe what you see. Try not to get angry. For example, say: “Hey, did a little puddle just appear there? Is that why you’re smiling a little?” Or say: “That’s funny, isn’t it? Does it feel funny to you, too? Come on, let’s clean it up. Shall we keep an eye out in case another puddle appears?”
