To get started with the first steps, your child doesn’t need to be able to do everything yet. It’s helpful if your child can walk, but they don’t need to be walking unaided yet. Take your child by the hand to the toilet or to a potty. Reading books and pointing out things related to potty training are important in Step 1. The diaper stays on for now. It’s not until the next step that your child will sit on the potty by themselves. By then, a few weeks will likely have passed, and your child may already be able to do this.
