My child hasn't had a bowel movement in three days. What should I do?

Ask your family doctor for advice

Having a bowel movement is more important than potty training. Is your child unable to have a bowel movement, even in a diaper? Does this happen often? Or does your child have a stomachache? If so, see your doctor.

There are many reasons why someone might not be able to have a bowel movement.

  • Maybe your child is afraid to poop in the potty or the toilet? In that case, put a diaper back on so your child can poop again. That’s more important right now than potty training. Not pooping can cause stomachaches and is bad for their little body.
  • Some children are willing to pee in the potty or toilet, but not poop. In that case, let your child put the diaper back on for a little while before pooping.
  • Sometimes children don’t want to poop in the potty or toilet because their poop is very hard or, on the contrary, very runny. That doesn’t feel good. This is often related to what they eat and drink—not drinking enough, or drinking too much, as well as fiber and fats.
  • Hard stools? Make sure your child drinks enough water throughout the day and eats plenty of fiber and healthy fats, such as whole-grain bread, healthy butter and peanut butter, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid giving them too many dry crackers, rice cakes, cookies, or white bread.
  • Is your baby’s stool very soft or runny? If so , your child may be eating too much fruit, vegetables, or dairy products throughout the day. Or there may be an allergy or intolerance. Talk to your doctor about this.
