My child doesn't let me know when he or she needs to go to the bathroom. Does that mean he or she isn't ready yet?

How does your child learn this?

This is exactly what your child will learn: to sense and recognize what’s happening in their little body. At first, they’ll say afterward: “Hey, I peed or pooped!” With a diaper on, this is often hard to feel. Later, your child will learn to sense it while it’s happening: “Hey, I’m peeing or pooping.” Finally, your child will learn to recognize it in advance: “Oh no, I need to pee or poop.” You’ll help your child recognize and name these signals. For example: “Hey, there’s poop in your diaper!” Or say: “You’re squirming—a wee is coming!” Or point out that a poop is coming when your child looks uncomfortable. Every child shows different signals.
