My child doesn't let me know when they need to go to the bathroom. Can we get started?

Your baby is learning to sense what's going on

This is exactly what your child will learn: to sense and recognize what’s happening in their little body. At first, they’ll say afterward: “Hey, I peed or pooped!” With a diaper on, this is often hard to feel. Later, your child will learn to sense it while it’s happening: “Hey, I’m peeing or pooping.” Finally, your child will learn to recognize it in advance: “Oh no, I need to pee or poop.” You’ll help your child recognize and name these signals. For example: “Hey, a poop in your diaper!” Or say: “You’re squirming—a pee is coming!” Or point out that a poop is coming when your child looks uncomfortable. Every child shows different signals.
