Is my child ready?

You can start as early as age 2. Younger? See how your child is doing.

Children are usually ready to take the first step between 1.5 and 2 years old. You can definitely start once your child turns 2. Note! During the first steps, your child will still be wearing a diaper when you take them to the toilet. You’ll also talk a lot and read books about peeing, pooping, potties, and the toilet. Only then will your child start practicing on the potty and the toilet. First with a diaper on, then gradually take the diaper off for an hour at a time.

To start with, your child doesn’t need to be able to do everything yet. It’s great if your child can walk, but they don’t need to be walking unaided yet. Does your child understand a little bit what you mean when you talk about diapers, peeing, pooping, and the toilet? By pointing things out or using simple words? If so, your child is ready. Start with Step 1: sparking interest. Follow your child’s lead and don’t rush things.
