Here’s some reassurance: at first, your child will still be wearing a diaper (Step 1). Once your child starts taking off the diaper (starting with Step 2), accidents can indeed happen. Identify what you’re afraid of. Are there items that shouldn’t get dirty, like a rug or the couch? If so, put them away when your child is running around without a diaper, or sit in another room. Make sure you have clean clothes and a bucket of soapy water ready. That makes cleaning up easier. Are you afraid of stress or a struggle? Then try practicing on days when you’re feeling good. Keep it lighthearted and try to see that your child is learning something new. Is it really hard for you? Then ask for tips, for example from other parents or the health clinic. They can often offer helpful advice.
