If you find yourself getting angry often, take a break from practicing for a moment. Getting angry doesn’t help your child. Are you having a bad day, or is your child very tired? Is it just not working out? Then it’s okay to skip steps 1, 2, or 3—or even the whole day. Tomorrow is another day!
Figure out what’s making you upset. Does your child refuse to use the potty or the toilet? It might be that you’re asking “Do you need to go?” a little too often. Or maybe your child doesn’t want to stop playing. In that case, practice at set times. This creates a routine and brings calm. It can help if you and other family members also go to the bathroom at those times. That way, everyone knows what to expect. Are there a lot of accidents? Check to see if you moved on to the next step (step 2, 3, or 4) too quickly, and take a step back. And pay extra close attention to your child’s cues. Is it going well again? Then give your child lots of praise. That helps to keep moving forward.
