How often and on which days should we practice?

Start with an hour a day and gradually build up from there

At first, your child will still be wearing a diaper (Step 1). You can talk about potty training, read books, take your child to the bathroom, and have them sit on the potty while still wearing a diaper a few times a week. For example, on the days when you’re home with your child.

In step 2, your child takes off their diaper for an hour a day to see what it’s like. Describe what you see when your child is pooping or peeing, whether in the diaper or on the potty. You can do this every day, but a few times a week is enough. Did your child have their first pee on the potty? Then it’s a good idea to practice a little more often.

In step 3, leave the diaper off for a few hours at a time. Point out what you see and help your child get to the potty in time. The more you practice, the better. Do this at least a few times a week, preferably every day.

Is that going well? Then the day will come when you can go without a diaper all day and you’ll still have plenty of practice ahead (Step 4). You won’t wear a diaper during the day anymore, so you’ll practice every day. In Step 4, it can be helpful to have some extra time.
