How do we make the transition from the potty to the toilet?

Take a lighthearted approach, step by step

Is your child already using the potty? Great. Are you ready to make the switch to the toilet? Keep it fun. Take your child with you to the bathroom when you go. Let your child explore the toilet: look around, flush a piece of toilet paper, listen. And go ahead and place the potty in the bathroom. You can also get into the habit of changing your child’s diaper while standing in the bathroom. Together, flush the pee or poop from the potty or diaper down the toilet. Say together, “Bye-bye, pee!” This will help your child get more used to the toilet.

Make sure you have a good toilet seat reducer and a sturdy step stool. Then let your child climb onto the toilet while still wearing a diaper or underwear. Most children will eventually want to try sitting on the toilet with their bottom bare. Tell your child they don’t have to pee or poop just yet. And explain that all the pee and poop in the toilet go “to the ocean” together. There’s no rush—take your time. Once your child is almost potty-trained on the potty, using the toilet often comes naturally.
