It’s best to start in a playful way, by reading books about potty training together and taking your child to the bathroom. You can do this when you’re using the bathroom yourself or when no one else is in there. Place a potty in the room and try putting a diaper on your child’s doll or stuffed animal. So you don’t need to prepare your child in any special way. Start by pointing out what’s in your child’s diaper: “Hey, I think you peed.” Or: “I smell a poop. Shall we see if it’s in your diaper?” Explain that big kids and grown-ups don’t wear diapers, but go to the bathroom. “And you’re becoming a big girl/boy too, aren’t you? Soon you’ll be able to do that too!”
