It helps if your child starts to get a feel for what’s happening. There are several ways to do this. Starting with Step 2, leave the diaper off for an hour a day, gradually increasing both the frequency and duration. It can be helpful to put on underwear and comfortable clothes afterward. That way, your child can quickly go to the bathroom or use the potty without having to struggle with tight pants or a diaper.
There are different types of pull-up diapers. There are pull-ups without Velcro, which look like little pants. You can put them on and take them off. They tend to be a bit more expensive and are only available in larger sizes. You can start using this type of diaper once potty training begins.
There are also cloth training pants. These let your child feel when they’re wet. Still, going bare-bottomed for a few hours a day works even better at first. Starting in step 3, you can use training pants or underwear during potty training sessions. At other times, a regular diaper is fine.
