My child doesn't mind getting his pants wet. What's next?

Set specific times and keep it fun

Sometimes a child is almost potty-trained, but suddenly seems to lose interest. Even if he or she pees in their pants, it doesn't seem to matter. How do you move forward?

Try to get your child excited about it again. Involve other caregivers if possible, such as grandparents, a babysitter, and the daycare center or childminder. Point out that your child is a big girl or big boy who’s almost ready to use the toilet—just like big kids and grown-ups. How impressive! Give lots of praise during practice and keep it fun. For children who are a bit older or more sensitive, it can help to establish set routines where everyone goes to the toilet at certain times. For example, when getting up, before meals, before the afternoon nap, or before going outside. Join in yourself. That way, it becomes a normal part of the routine that everyone in the family does. Or make it extra fun. Put on a song and dance your way to the toilet or potty. Bring along some stuffed animals or toys. Reward them with compliments, high fives, or a little dance. Not something they have to do, but something fun!
