Am I ready?

Get off to a good start with time, attention, and a step-by-step plan

You’re ready to start potty training if you can dedicate some time and attention to it over the next few weeks—and if your child is 18 months or older. It helps to have a general idea of what to expect. Starting during a move or a major life change isn’t usually a good idea, since there will be a lot of distractions. Piquing your child’s curiosity and introducing them to the potty and toilet is step 1. You can easily do this during short moments throughout the week or on the weekend. Practicing without a diaper comes later. At first, you’ll only need a potty and, for example, books from the library. Later on, you’ll also need a toilet seat reducer, a step stool, and underwear for your child. Go for it!
