Going to daycare without a diaper

You’ll learn how to coordinate with your child’s daycare or school when your child stops wearing diapers and how to make the transition as easy as possible.

Your child is now practicing without a diaper. This happens not only at home, but also at daycare or school. Clear agreements with the childcare staff will help your child continue practicing there as well.

Important coordination with childcare providers

When your child goes to daycare or school without a diaper, it helps to set clear ground rules together. You’ve already discussed how you’ll practice this. In this phase, you’ll build on that.

Tell them which times at home are good for taking a quick trip to the bathroom. For example, agree to take your child to the bathroom after playing outside, before dinner, or after a nap.

Make things easy for the daycare center, too. Pack plenty of clean clothes: underwear, pants, and socks. After all, little accidents are still a part of this stage.

Sometimes, after two or three accidents in a day, the daycare center will put a diaper on the child. Discuss this in advance so there are no surprises.

Explain to your child that they might take a break from potty training at daycare, but that at home, they’ll take off their diaper and keep it off.

Tips

Tip 1 – Pack extra clothes
Underwear, pants, and socks will help you handle accidents with ease.

Tip 2 – Set specific times for using the toilet
For example, after waking up, playing outside, or eating.

Tip 3 – Talk about how you’ll handle accidents
That way, you’ll both know what to do if things don’t go as planned.
