Wiping your own bottom

Your child will learn to wipe their own bottom step by step

Watch the video

Once your child starts using the toilet on their own more often, there’s a new step to take: wiping their own bottom. They usually don’t get it right away, and you’ll need to help them for quite a while. With a little practice, your child will get better and better at it.

Here's how to do it

Wiping their own bottoms can be pretty tricky for young children. It takes practice, just like going to the bathroom on time. At first, you’ll often need to give them a little help.

You can let your child try it first, and then check to make sure it’s clean.

A fun way to practice this is with two tangerines and a little peanut butter. Place the tangerines side by side. Those are the buttocks. Spread a little peanut butter between them. That’s the poop.

Let your child try using toilet paper to wipe everything clean. This way, your child will see that sometimes you have to wipe more than once before it’s really clean.

This makes practicing clear and even a little fun.
