Here's how to take the big step
- The first few days without diapers will require a little extra time, patience, and attention on your part. Your child really needs to learn to sense when they need to pee or poop. They don’t always manage to do this in time yet.
- Try to take it easy for the first few days. Stay close to your baby and check in on them every now and then. You don’t have to hover over them all the time, but being there for them does help.
- Use the routines you’re already familiar with: after waking up, before meals, or before going outside. This will help your child remember to use the toilet.
- Accidents are bound to happen. Sometimes they involve poop. That can be messy and happen at the worst possible moment. It’s all part of this stage. Stay calm and clean it up together. And when things do go well? Make sure to acknowledge that too: “You felt it and went to the bathroom. Good job—you’re growing up.”
What can you do?
- Make sure the potty is always nearby
- Always keep a close eye on your child. What signs do you notice?
- Ask your child often if he or she needs to go to the bathroom. For example, every half hour.
- Heading out? Have your child use the potty or the toilet first.
- Always bring extra clothes and cleaning wipes.
- Give your child lots of compliments. Point out what they’re doing well. Just trying again and again is impressive in itself!
- Reward your child and celebrate every time they succeed. For example, with a sticker or a high five.
- Had a little accident? Stay calm and don't get angry. Clean up together and pick out some clean clothes. Don't punish your child. Better luck next time!
