Potty training is over. That’s a big step. The first few days without diapers may take some getting used to for both of you. With patience, attention, and persistence, you can help your child build confidence.

Here's how to take the big step

The first few days without diapers require a little extra attention. Your child really needs to learn to sense when they need to pee or poop. They don’t always manage to do this in time yet.

Try to take it easy for the first few days. Stay close to your baby and check in on them every now and then. You don’t have to hover over them all the time, but being there for them does help.

Use the times you’re already familiar with: after waking up, before meals, or before going outside. This will help your child remember to use the toilet.

Accidents are bound to happen. Sometimes they involve poop. That can be messy and happen at the worst possible moment. It’s all part of this stage.

Stay calm and clean it up together. And if everything goes well? Point that out too:
“You felt it and went to the bathroom. Good job—you’re growing up.”
