The big moment

You get to decide when to finally take off the diaper. What a milestone!

Taking off the diaper. How do you go about it?

  • Has the training in step 3 been going well for a while? Then there will come a time when you can stop using diapers during the day altogether. Many children find this exciting, but also fun. It means they’re growing up!
  • Choose a quiet day to start. For example, a day when you’re both at home and don’t have many plans. That way, you’ll have time to practice and respond calmly if an accident happens.
  • Tell your child in advance what’s going to happen. For example, that you won’t need a diaper during the day anymore. Because you’re a big girl (or big boy). And that you’ll keep practicing going to the bathroom together. Will you let me know when you need to pee or poop?
  • Let your child pick out a nice pair of underwear for that day. And set aside a few pairs for later.
  • The first few days can take some getting used to. Sometimes things go smoothly right away, and sometimes there are still a few accidents—sometimes as many as one or two a day. That’s all part of the process. By staying calm and sticking with it, your child will learn the fastest.

Tips

  • Choose a quiet day to get started. Start when you’re at home and have time to practice.
  • Tell your child what’s going to happen. Tell them they’re a big kid now and don’t need diapers anymore. Good job!
  • Make sure you have extra clean clothes on hand. There will be a few accidents in the first few days—that’s just part of the process. They’ll become less and less frequent.
  • Give plenty of compliments when things are going well. Keep offering encouragement.
  • Make sure to keep the diaper off during the day. Even when you're out and about, in the car, or visiting someone. Go ahead of time, make an extra stop, and go right away when you arrive at your destination.
