What will your child learn in Step 2?

Good to know

  • In the previous step, your child has become increasingly curious about the potty and the toilet. Your child knows what the toilet is for and that big kids and grown-ups don’t wear diapers anymore. Your child wants to do that too!
  • In this step, your child will try using the potty for the first time to pee or poop. Your child first needs to learn to recognize the sensations in their body. That takes time and practice. You’ll be there to help your child through this process.

In the following exercises in this step, you will learn, for example:

  • how to encourage your child
  • How to tell when your baby needs to pee or poop
  • Why it's important to respond calmly
  • How to Prepare Your Home for Drills
  • how to plan short diaper-free practice sessions

The most important thing in this step is that you practice together at a relaxed pace. Taking small steps helps your child understand what’s happening. This step usually takes a few weeks. No matter how old your child is, don’t skip this step.

Tips

  • Remember that you're now in Step 2. Your little one is about to learn something new!
  • Don't expect miracles right away. Learning takes time. This step usually takes a few weeks.
  • Encourage your child to give it a try. You can never give too many compliments!
  • Don’t take the diaper off all at once. Start with an hour a day and follow the progression of this training program.
