What will your child learn in Step 1?

What do you learn in Step 1?

The first step is to spark your child’s curiosity about peeing, pooping, diapers, the potty, and the toilet—by watching, listening, and imitating what you do.

Good to know

In this step, you’ll help your child become curious about the potty and the toilet. Do this in a playful way, without giving too many explanations.

Your child doesn't need to start potty training just yet.

First, your child learns what happens on the toilet and what a potty is. And that big kids don’t wear diapers anymore. This helps your child understand what it means to be potty-trained—and makes them want to learn how to do it too.

The best way to do that is in a playful manner.

What can you do?

  • talking about peeing, pooping, diapers, and the toilet
  • Choose words that you use at home (using the poster)
  • reading a book together about potty training
  • introducing your child to the potty
  • show them the toilet and flush it together

You'll learn more about this in the exercises for this step.

Tips

  • Keep it fun. Curiosity often comes naturally.
  • Keep it short and simple. For example, start by reading a book.
  • Chat about it or show them the bathroom? You can do that anytime.
  • Give your child some time. This step is all about exploration.
