Here's what to expect

  • Your child has already peed or pooped in the potty or toilet a few times. In Step 3, you’ll continue practicing. The diaper will be left off more often and for longer periods, one step at a time. In this step, set routines, repetition, and plenty of encouragement will help.

What will you learn in Step 3?

  • At this stage, many children still often pee in their diapers or pants. That’s just part of the process. Over the next few weeks, you’ll be practicing together more regularly.
  • You're going to help your child recognize when they need to pee or poop. In other words, before it happens. That way, your child will make it to the potty in time more often.
  • You'll start practicing using the potty or toilet at set times. You'll gradually increase the amount of time spent without a diaper and wear underwear more often and for longer periods.
  • At this stage, parents often find things get a little trickier. Don’t panic. We’ll show you how to move forward. What can you do if your child refuses? Or is afraid of the toilet? How to handle accidents. And how to keep going.
  • In the following activities, we’ll walk you through step by step how to help your child with this. Go for it—you can do this!
