Good to know

  • Is your child already over 3 years old and about to start school? If so, this might help with potty training. Many children enjoy the idea of using the toilet just like the other big kids.
  • You can calmly explain what will happen at school. For example, explain that big kids use the bathroom at school and don’t wear diapers. That’s part of growing up.

For example, say:

“At school, the children go to the bathroom when they need to pee.”
“Older children don’t wear diapers there anymore.”

Did you know that some schools have as many as two or three toilets right next to each other? Funny, isn't it?

  • Some children also enjoy hearing that they’ll soon be able to do things on their own. Like walking to the bathroom by themselves, flushing the toilet, and washing their hands.
  • It helps to talk about this every now and then, without putting any pressure on them. That way, they’ll become more motivated to learn it on their own. Once your child understands it and wants to join in, then you can start practicing.
  • Is your child feeling a little nervous about all this? Reassure your child. Tell them that you’ll practice together and that they’ll definitely be able to do it. There’s still plenty of time!

Tips

  • Tell your child that older kids use the restroom at school. Explain that using the restroom is part of growing up.
  • Keep it light and don't put any pressure on yourself. Motivation often grows step by step.
  • Reassure your child if needed. You’ll practice together—it’ll be fine.
