In this step, your child will start practicing without a diaper for the first time. About an hour a day, a few times a week. Hopefully, they’ll soon be able to pee in the potty or the toilet.
But accidents happen. It helps if your home is somewhat prepared for them. That way, you can stay calm when your child needs to go to the bathroom.
Here's how to do it
Take a look around your house and get a few small items ready for practice. For example, clear off a rug or put a mattress protector on the couch.
Place the potty in a spot that’s easy for your child to reach. For example, in the living room, kitchen, bathroom, or near where your child plays.
Make sure you have a few things on hand. For example:
a few sets of clean clothes
a washcloth, toilet paper, and baby wipes
a bucket and a cleaning cloth
a laundry basket or bin for wet clothes
Is everything ready? Then you won't have to scramble to find things if an accident happens. That saves time and stress.
Tips
Put the jar somewhere your child can easily reach it. That way, you'll be on time more often.
Put away any valuable items or cover them with a mattress protector.
Lay out clean clothes for your child and get the cleaning supplies ready in advance. That way, you won’t have to search for them.
Stay calm if there's a little accident. Your child is learning something new—it's all part of the process.
