You’ll help your child get used to the potty in a playful way, so it doesn’t seem strange or scary anymore.

Working together

  • In this step, the potty really starts to become interesting for your child. Your child can look at it, touch it, and explore it. Your child doesn’t have to do anything on it yet. Getting used to the potty first is an important step.

What can you do?

  • Place the jar somewhere your child can see it clearly. For example, in the bathroom or in the living room.
  • Let your child explore the potty at their own pace. Maybe they’ll want to sit on it, or maybe they’ll just want to look at it. Either way is fine.
  • You can also demonstrate it a little. Sit down together by the potty, or have a stuffed animal sit on it.
  • Some children like to sit on the potty for a moment while still wearing a diaper. That’s okay. It helps your child get a feel for the potty.
  • For many children, just a few seconds is enough. That’s fine.
  • Is your little one not ready to sit yet? Try again in a few days. The most important thing is that the potty becomes a familiar place.

Tips

  • Let your child choose for themselves: look at it first, touch it, or sit on it for a moment.
  • Make it a fun moment, for example with a cuddle.
  • Keep it short and relaxed. Getting used to the potty is enough for now.
  • Does your little one not want to yet? That's okay. Try again in a few days.
