Introduction: How Ready for Potty Works

Good to know

  • For your child, potty training means learning something new—with your help. Just like learning to walk and talk. Every child is different, so it may come more quickly or easily for some than for others. But there are steps you can follow.
  • Potty training means that your child is becoming more and more aware of what’s happening in their body. You’ll help your child recognize these signals better and better, and show them what the potty and the toilet are for.
  • It works best if you don't take the diaper off all at once. In step 1, the diaper stays on. In step 2, take the diaper off for an hour. After that, leave it off for longer periods and more often.
  • Follow all the steps and don’t rush. Even if your child is already 3 years old or older. You help, encourage, and pay close attention to your child. You’re doing this together, as a team!
  • Each step usually takes a few weeks. It can go faster if you can set aside more time and attention. But go at your child’s pace and don’t rush things

These are the steps of Ready for Potty

  • Step 1. Your child starts to show interest. You help your child become curious about diapers, pooping, peeing, potty training, and the toilet. Your child begins to understand that there is a world without diapers.
  • Step 2. First time on the potty. Yourchild will start to sense what’s happening—both during and after. And they’ll make their first pee or poop on the potty. You’ll get better and better at recognizing and naming the signs.
  • Step 3. Getting it right more often. Your child is getting better at sensing when they need to pee or poop. And they’re making it to the potty or toilet on time more often. You set aside specific times and help your child recognize these signals.
  • Step 4. Goodbye, diapers! In this final step, your child practices going completely without diapers. You encourage your child and help them get to the toilet in time—even when you’re out and about or somewhere else—until there are fewer than two accidents per week.

  • Follow the 4 steps and don't take the diaper off all at once.
  • Watch your child closely and don't rush things.
  • Keep it fun and stay positive; work together as a team.
  • Remember: potty training is about learning something new. Encourage your child!
