A big step: picking out underwear!

Working together

  • Many children find underwear interesting. It’s something that big kids and grown-ups wear. By looking at it together or talking about it, you can spark your child’s curiosity about potty training.

‍Pick out underwear for your child together

  • You can look at or pick out a few pairs of underwear together with your child. Many children enjoy choosing their favorite color or a pair of underwear with a picture on it. That way, it becomes something that’s all their own.

Tell them that big kids wear underwear instead of diapers.

  • For example, say: “Mommy is wearing underwear. All moms and dads wear underwear. Grandmas and grandpas do too. And all the big kids. They don’t wear diapers anymore—they wear underwear.”
  • Show us the family's underwear. In the closet, or while you're wearing it. Just the edge is fine, too. No diapers, okay? You see?

Underwear over the diaper

  • Please note: Don’t take your child’s diaper off right away. That comes in the next step. The main thing right now is for your child to see that underwear is part of growing up. Some underwear fits over a diaper. Kids often really like that!
  • You can also show them every now and then how underwear works: pull down your pants, sit on the toilet, and then get dressed again. And put on a clean pair every morning!

Tips

  • Let your little one pick out their own underwear. It makes it even more fun!
  • Speaking of underwear: that's something for big kids and grown-ups.
  • Keep the diaper on. You can put the underwear over the diaper. The point right now is to spark curiosity, not to practice.
  • Make it fun. Show off your new underwear to the rest of the family.
