Good to know

  • Did you know that children are expected to be potty-trained by the time they start first grade? After all, the teacher can’t change the diapers of 30 children. In the Netherlands, children start elementary school at age 4.
  • Primary school might still seem a long way off. Still, it helps to start potty training early. Your child needs time to learn this at their own pace. For most children, it takes 2 to 5 months.
  • Potty training is a step-by-step process. First, your child learns to take an interest in peeing and pooping. Then comes the first time on the potty or the toilet. Only later does it start to happen more and more often.
  • Is your child almost 4 years old and not yet potty trained? Don’t panic. Many children can still make significant progress before they start school.
  • Start with Step 1, even if your child is almost 4 years old. Don’t take the diaper off all at once; go through all the steps. In this training, you’ll learn how to do that.
  • Stay positive and encourage your child. That works best.

Tips

  • Start early. You canbegin as soon as your child is 2 years old. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to prepare for school. Go through all the steps and follow your child’s lead.
  • Is your child older than 3.5 years old? If so, start with Step 1 now. Don’tget upset and don’t skip any steps. Your child is doing their best and learning step by step.
  • Tell your child about elementary school. Explain that big kids go to the bathroom there and don’t wear diapers anymore. Your child will be able to do that too soon!
