Coordinate with a daycare center or child care provider

You understand why it’s important to coordinate with daycare or a childminder when potty training.

Watch the video

Many children attend daycare or go to a child care provider. At this stage, it becomes increasingly important that everyone follows the same routine. This gives your child a sense of clarity and security.

Talk it over

Let the daycare center or child care provider know that you’re currently potty training.

For example, explain that you sometimes practice going without a diaper for short periods and that you pay attention to your child’s cues.

Also ask how they handle this. Maybe they have set times for potty training or look for certain cues from your child.

Together, you can discuss what works best. For example:

  • What words do you use for peeing and pooping?
  • when your child is ready to use the potty
  • what signs you notice

Keep each other updated on what you notice. That way, you can work together to help your child.

Tips

  • Tell them that you've started potty training.
  • Ask how the daycare center or childminder helps children with potty training. Ask if they have potties there as well.
  • Keep sharing with each other what you see and experience.
